Tipping and the Holidays

When it comes to the holidays, it seems like everyone and their brother expects to be tipped. Now, I’m in no way anti-service industry folks, but I just can’t afford to tip everyone.

When you tip, how do you tip? Do you do it with cash? A gift card? A goodie?

I know that my hairdresser is saving up for some Kamisori Scissors and all her extra tip money is going towards hairdressing shears. So, for her I will tip her in cash.

I’ve never met our newspaper delivery person, and she provided an envelope with her address on it for us. I don’t like sending cash, so I’ll send her a gift card to Starbucks.

I’m thinking about leaving our trash collectors a plate full of goodies (wrapped well, of course) because I’m skeptical of leaving even a card containing cash or a gift card outside, regardless of how much I trust our neighbors.

Who all do you tip? Is there anyone you tip more than others? Are there any people you think it’s ridiculous to tip?

I agree. Families are already struggling to meet the financial strains of the holidays to begin with. Setting limits is important. I try to get a few gift cards together for my children’s teachers through my online earning sites, and then they’ll probably get chocolate too. The mailman might get something if I have something, because I make him work hard with all the boxes he brings. That’s it though.

The chick left an envelope with her address on it??? I wouldn’t send her anything at all but that’s just me… To me there’s a huge difference between making a nice gesture and someone holding their hand out in expectation.

The mailman here gets a gift card with some homemade goodies in a tin. Full case of beer sitting outside by the trash with a bow on it for the trash guys. Yes, we’re redneck like that. lol

Totally forgot to mention our mail lady. Yes, we definitely give her something – usually a Starbucks gift card, too – so she can warm up after her route (even though she sits in the mail truck the whole time)

The beer is actually a really good idea!

Janessa, I love you. Is tat too forward of me to say?

Last year our news girl did the same and I did what you said. Nada.

I love the beer idea, how cool is that?

I gave the UPS guy a Stbx GC and cookies, same for the mailman. UPS thanked me today and said the cookies were awesome. So I gave him more! I may now have a crush on him, though, oops. :)

    I think simple is best!
