Teaching your children about the environment

This is a guest post from Jenna Lee Smith

As your children grow, you are the one responsible for teaching them all the important life lessons that will help them to grow into responsible adults. They’ll need to learn about getting along with others, how to be a productive citizen, how to handle dating and romance, and how to act maturely. A very important part of your responsibility as a parent is to teach your children about the environment, as they need to learn about their responsibility to the planet they live on.

But what do you need to teach them about?

Global Warming

Global warming is a controversy among many people in the world today, as many people believe that there is nothing that can be done to improve the situation. You may or may not want to teach your children about global warming, and there’s really no way to say if it’s an important topic or not. Consider how important it is for you, and determine if it’s something your kids need to learn about.

Caring for the Earth

One of the things that you will have to teach your kids about is caring for the planet. Teach them about littering, and how it can destroy the planet. Take them out into the woods or the mountains, and show them how beautiful nature can be when it’s untouched and wild. Explain to them that plastic and other man-made materials will last for hundreds of years, all the while leaking pollution into the ground and atmosphere and doing damage to the planet. Help them to realize that it’s their responsibility to take care of the planet, and that they need to do what they can to keep their small corner of the Earth as green as possible.

Conservation of Natural Resources

Your kids need to learn about the natural resources of our Earth, as it’s something that will affect their future. Gasoline, for example, comes from crude oil, as does plastic, asphalt, lubricants, and many other things. They’ll need to realize that a lot of the energy that is produced by the electric company is produced using nuclear fuel, which can harm the planet. You will want to teach them about how greenhouse gases can damage the environment, and how burning up fossil fuels will deplete the natural resources on the planet.

They’ll need to have all of these things explained to them, and you can show them what they can do to conserve resources in their home. Simple things like using paper bags instead of plastic or recycling used plastic, glass, and metal items can help them to learn about how they can conserve natural resources.

Saving Money to Save the Planet

One very important thing to teach your kids is about how to save money by reducing energy costs. Show them articles of how companies like Ambit Energy Plano are taking steps to produce clean energy from renewable sources, and how they can produce their own renewable energy using solar panels and wind turbines. Teach them that simple things like turning off lights and closing the fridge door can help to reduce the amount of energy used by your appliances, which will keep their energy bills low.

Teaching your kids all of these things is a very important part of preparing them to be adults. It’s their responsibility to care for the planet, just like it’s your responsibility as well. If you help them to form these habits from a young age, it will help them to automatically do it when they grow older. The result: a cleaner planet thanks to responsible adults trained by their parents as children.
