I recently had the opportunity to give some new pet products a try. As a cat owner, there’s not a LOT you need to do as far as grooming goes because they have their tongues. However, every now and then you might want to take your life into your hands and give them a bath.
Stop laughing.
Ellis & Helton each had a bath after we brought them home from the shelter. Vinny had two baths, one when he came home from the shelter, and one the night before he passed away. When he had his seizure, he lost control of his bladder. Saturday, we brought home our newest addition to the family, Tulo, and he too had to endure the bath of shame.
Opie & Dixie provided me an unscented kitty shampoo, which I used on Tulo. Because cats have a very keen sense of smell, this shampoo is unscented so as not to be offensive to the cat. Tulo probably doesn’t recommend this shampoo as highly as I do – in fact I am pretty sure he would want you to know how horrible it is and that no cat needs it, but I will attest to how soft he was after surviving his ordeal.
I also received some organic ear wash which is appropriate for both dogs and cats. Ellis has some pretty yucky ears, and likes having them cleaned about as much as Tulo liked his shower, but after using the wash for a week I noticed a decline in his scratching his ear.
The final product that I received for review was Flax Fur Pets, a dietary supplement which contains a rich blend of veterinarian-approved ingredients including 60 amino acids, 21 antioxidants, essential macro and micronutrients and essential fatty acids for your pet’s well being. I sprinkle this on their food every morning and mix it in. It works great for their coats to help keep them soft and shiny (even without a bath!) This product is formulated for both dogs and cats.
Opie and Dixie is the brain child of Debbie Guardian, mom to Opal (Opie) and Dixie, two adorable dogs. The company advocates for pet rescue (as opposed to buying from a breeder or a pet store) and supports many Bay Area (CA) shelters and animal welfare organizations, one of which is Tony LaRussa’s ARF Foundation, where I volunteered for about a year when I lived in the Bay Area.
Buy It: All of these products are available from Opie and Dixie. The cat shampoo retails for $14.95, the ear wash for $12.95, and the Flax Fur Pets for $19.95.
Win: Opie and Dixie is offering one lucky reader an 8 oz herbal shampoo which can be used on both dogs and cats.
Mandatory Entry: Head on over to Opie and Dixie and come back and tell me something you learned about the company or a product/ingredient. This entry is mandatory and no others will count if this is not completed.

The healing paw balm would have been so useful a couple years ago. One of our dogs suddenly became a 3-legged pup while battling cancer. Everything went fine even though, being a great dane, she was the largest dog they’d ever done that sort of surgery on, but after a few months we noticed that her one remaining hind leg tended to get really roughed up from hopping around.
