As an occupational therapist, I work with people with various illnesses and disabilities. Glaucoma is an increasingly popular condition that I see in my elderly patients.
What is Glaucoma?
It is a name given to a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve and can cause significant vision problems. The largest cause is high eye pressure built up when the drainage systems in the eye are blocked. Over time this pressure causes permanent optic nerve damage, however the high eye pressure can be treated.
Who is at risk for Glaucoma?
Anyone can develop glaucoma, but the risk becomes greater as you age. People who are more likely to develop it:
* Have high eye pressure
* Are markedly nearsighted
* Have a family history of glaucoma
* Are of African descent (open-angle glaucoma)
* Are of Asian descent (angle-closure glaucoma)
* Have high blood pressure
Thanks to All Eyes on Glaucoma for the facts.
Glaucoma IS treatable, however nerve damage sustained from high eye pressure is irreversible. The most important thing you can do is to be proactive and if you are at risk for Glaucoma, visit an ophthalmologist regularly to be checked. Early intervention and treatment can slow the progression of the disease.
If you or someone you know is at risk for developing Glaucoma, please take this week to make an appointment to be checked.
