You clean your house on a regular basis. The dishes are washed, laundry is done, carpets are vacuumed and floors are mopped. But how often do you give your home a really thorough cleaning? When did you last dust your ceiling fans with waffle weave towels, or steam clean your carpets?
If it’s been a while, or never even crossed your mind, it might be time to do it. Here’s a guide to giving your home a thorough cleaning.
Buy or rent a steam cleaner
No matter how often you dust and vacuum, dust still collects in your carpet and the soft fabrics of your furniture. This dust can leave your socks and feet dirty and contribute to allergies.
A steam cleaner can go deep into the fibers of your carpets and furniture to pull out the dust and dirt that the vacuum leaves behind and really clean them.
While the actual use of the steam cleaner may take only a couple of hours, it will take a few more hours for the carpets and furniture to fully dry before you can use them again, so be prepared for this to be an all day project.
Use the right cleaning supplies
Glass cleaner, wood polish, floor wax, toilet bowl cleaner – there are a variety of products out there for every surface and area you need to clean. It’s important to use the right ones on the right surfaces, to ensure that you get a glossy, beautiful surface without leaving traces of dust or cleaning product behind.
The right cloth for the job is also important. Microfiber waffle weave towels are an excellent multi-use cloth. It’s thirsty enough to soak up spills, sprays, and dry off any damp surface, while also not leaving any lint behind. They’ll also give you a streak-free shine on glass, and they’re smooth enough that you don’t have to worry about them snagging and scratching delicate surfaces.
Focus and work methodically
When you want to clean the whole house, it’s easy to bounce back and forth between kitchen and bathroom, living room and bedrooms, laundry room and dining room, trying to get it all done. You may think you’ll accomplish more by going back and forth, but you’ll actually end up missing things this way.
Instead, focus on one room at a time. Clean the room from top to bottom. Why top to bottom? Because as you dust, some dust may fall to lower levels. Working top to bottom ensures you get all the dust, while cleaning every surface. Work top to bottom, and from one side of the room to the other. When you finish one room, move to the next.
Cleaning your home thoroughly doesn’t have to be hard. With the right tools, an organized attitude, and a logical method, you can clean deeply. Do this on a regular basis, and you’ll find it also gets faster and easier.
