Great iPod and iPad apps for toddlers

I posted earlier this week that my iPad (and iPod touch) has been a lifesaver on this road trip with Violet. Violet has been using the iPad since I first got it, which was in early April when she was not quite 19 months old. As the summer has progressed, we have added more apps to it for her, and she is quickly mastering them at not yet two years. Here are some of our favorites:

First Words Animals by Learning Touch. The child slides the letters that spell the name of the animal into place. The narrator says each letter as it is touched, and says the name of the animal as it is touched.

Along with First Words Animals, she also enjoys First Words Vehicles, which is the same premise but instead of animals it is different vehicles.

One that is great for little ones is Uncolor. The child simply rubs their finger across the screen, and parts of a photo are uncovered until they finally rub away all of it. She’s recently taken to this one.

Elmo’s Monster Maker is by far her favorite. She LOVES to create new monsters with different eyes and noses, and then loves to dance along with them as they play with Elmo. She can play this game for hours on end.

She spends some time playing with the Fisher Price See n Say and Chatter Telephone on occasion. They are just like the real life versions of these games, only a little more high tech with videos of actual animals and people who talk to you on the other end of the phone.

Her latest favorite that makes her laugh like crazy is the Talking Tom Cat. She LOVES talking to him and hearing him talk back to her. She loves to wave hi and by to him when she starts and stops the game, too.

These are just some of Violet’s favorites on the iPad. If your child has an iPad or iPod Touch, I’d be interested to hear what apps they enjoy!

Hi Katie, just checking out your blog and I’m glad I did as I found your apps for toddlers! We use the ipod touch and usually my daughter just watches Sesame Street podcasts. I’m hoping some of these are not just for the ipad.

I think all of the ones I mentioned work both on the iPod and the iPad. She prefers the iPad, but sometimes we’ll give her the iPod if I throw that in my bag instead.
